Business Advantages of Green Trucking

June 16, 2016

Protecting the environment and reducing energy consumption long ago moved from special interest to mainstream concern. The trucking industry has seen numerous regulations that led to a drastic reduction in emissions on trucks. When diesel prices were reaching ever higher levels, fuel economy was wholeheartedly embraced. Circumstances forced the industry to make those changes, but carriers that choose to continue down that greener road may well find that it leads to a pot of gold.

More customers – All kinds of companies tout their environmentally conscious practices to the public, and many have incorporated environmental awareness into their mission statements. When it comes to transporting their products, customers will be inclined to favor a carrier that also makes green practices a priority.

Any carrier that is SmartWay certified, uses CNG or LNG, or is otherwise making an effort to be environmentally friendly should include that information in its marketing materials, on its websites and in conversations with potential customers. Carriers that become Smartway Partners are listed on the organization’s website.

Staying ahead of regulations – There’s no secret about where future emissions and fuel consumption requirements are headed. Things will only get stricter, and while much of the burden falls on truck and trailer manufacturers, once they have the equipment available, carriers must decide when to take the investment plunge. Introducing the equipment before the deadline allows the company time to spread out the cost of compliance and understand the new equipment.

And carriers that want to stay even more steps ahead can take a look at California’s rules regarding emissions and assume that they will eventually go nationwide.

Reduced costs – All fleet managers and drivers understand that more miles per gallon equals lower fuel costs. But, as a rule, fuel-efficient technologies are easier on the engine too, so maintenance costs and downtime also decrease. Many states also offer tax incentives for energy efficiency or sustainability efforts.
