WEX Featured on Maine Life

November 20, 2017

Maine Life host Erin Ovalle recently sat with CEO Melissa Smith and two other WEXers to talk about what it’s like to live and work in Maine. The segment aired earlier this month as part of the TV and online program that explores Maine and shares stories from interesting and hardworking people who call the state home.

As only 5% of companies are nationally led by women, Ovalle spoke with Smith about the challenges of being a female CEO. Smith recalled the surprise and shock that met her when she first walked into a room 12 years ago as WEX CFO. Over time, Smith shared, she’s learned that being a woman in a leadership position is a chance to make an impression – and that when people notice you’re different, that’s not all bad.

Perspectives on WEX culture and work-life balance were provided by Chad Creelman, marketing analytics manager, and Gabe Weiss, associate general counsel. Weiss spoke of the company’s “work hard, play hard” philosophy that has allowed him to pursue challenges in the office while exploring four-season Maine adventures with his family. For Creelman, the excitement of working in a fast-growing company that also recognizes and respects that he’s a husband and father is a big piece of what he loves about being a WEXer.

Smith closed the segment looking to the future, saying that “The next five years will be even more transformative. The way that we work in the world is changing and the rate of technology change is just incredible, so I’m excited about how we’re positioned and where we’re going as a business.”
