The path to growing your trucking business starts with a reliable partner

Evans Delivery, a family business at heart

At Evans Delivery, people stay true to their origins and treat partners as members of an ever-growing family. The transportation and logistics company was founded in 1939 in Pottsville, PA and has since expanded considerably. In its early years, Evans Delivery performed local deliveries, Sears Home runs, and warehousing. Today, it is one of the largest intermodal drayage providers in the U.S. and has 750 agent locations nationwide.

“What we really do is support entrepreneurs, we’re an agent-based business,” says Brian Frey, chief financial officer at Evans Delivery. “We provide them working capital to run their business, we provide them the system to run their business, and we provide them the insurance to run their business,” he says.

With over 80 years of experience and access to over 8,000 trucks, Evans Delivery services most major marine terminals and intermodal rail facilities in the U.S. In addition to its transportation and logistics offering, Evans Delivery provides truckload, flatbed, less than truckload (LTL), and final mile services.

The difficulty in growing a small business

In a constantly shifting economy and global supply chain, small trucking companies face numerous challenges. However, many have found ways to improve their operations and grow, whether it be through fuel savings, increased cash flow, or acquiring new assets.

In 2013, when Brian started his career at Evans Delivery, it was a tenth of the size that it is now and had about $200 million in top-line revenue. Today, that number sits at about $2.5 billion. “With WEX’s help, half of that was organic growth and half of it was through acquisition,” Brian says. “The support we got from WEX through those acquisitions was fantastic.”

Evans Delivery issues WEX fuel cards to all of its agents, who then use Evans Delivery services and operating authorities to run their business. The drivers within the network of over 8,000 trucks are each responsible for their own fuel, meaning that Evans Delivery deducts fuel transactions from driver pay. To make all of this possible, WEX created a custom-built software package that seamlessly integrated with the existing system at Evans Delivery.

Partnering with a fintech company fuels growth

Fintech solutions are the key to growing any company and can prove especially important for small businesses. A trusted fintech company — like WEX — can propel small businesses to new heights and help larger businesses achieve sustained growth through a variety of solutions:

  1. Fueling made easy. WEX fuel cards are accepted universally at thousands of truck stop locations across North America. With an average savings of 15¢ per gallon, truck drivers can go the extra mile while simultaneously saving hard-earned money.
  2. Unleash the power of big data. Carrier TrendSource allows trucking companies to analyze their freight volume, track spending, and learn how they stack up against peer competitors.
  3. Keep your employees and bottom line safe. WEX telematics helps businesses improve driver behavior and reduce unnecessary fuel usage. Businesses can also track their assets and utilize performance insights to keep an eye on productivity and maintenance needs.
  4. Access a savings network like no other. Through the WEX EDGE savings network, small businesses gain exclusive discounts on countless goods and services beyond fuel.
  5. Get paid faster. WEX Capital tailors factoring programs to give businesses access to same-day funding, all without any hidden fees. Businesses always have flexibility in their operations, as WEX Capital does not impose a minimum or maximum number of invoices to factor.

By partnering with WEX, businesses of any size can count on access to innovative and reliable solutions. “The technology was a clear winner with WEX over what we were using,” Brian says. “They’ve been a great partner for us, but a better partner for our drivers.” Growing a business does not happen overnight, but with a dedicated fintech partner like WEX, trucking companies can take the first step toward achieving their financial, operational, and structural goals.
