WEX Intern Program Expands

May 31, 2018

We had ambitious goals when we launched our first formal internship program in 2017 at our South Portland headquarters. After hosting 32 students last summer, we have now welcomed a new group of 90 interns working in 8 of our North American locations. The growth of our internship program and its 10-week curriculum are part of our long-term goal to convert our interns into full-time WEX employees.

“We’re excited about our interns’ diversity and depth of talent that’s a reflection of the fact that we had applicants from 47 states and hired interns from 27 schools, including Northeastern, Yale, MIT, Cornell, UT Texas, University of Chicago, and of course schools across Maine,” remarked Gimbala Sankare, who spearheads our internship program. “We have an even mix of rising seniors and graduate students, and they will be engaged in meaningful work in all areas of the company this summer.”

Programmed for Success

The curriculum developed by Sankare is designed to provide interns with a broader perspective beyond just their work, starting with a “WEX’Cursion” on day two. This all-day trip was a fun introduction to the company and focused on team building activities. The 50 interns working in our Maine offices spent the day on Cow Island in Casco Bay, participating in group activities and adventures like kayaking, hiking, wall climbing, zip lining, and more. In other WEX locations, interns collaborated in escape room challenges and other fun pursuits.

Throughout the summer, interns will get an inside look at corporate strategy, technology, communications, and other aspects of our business through our Summer Leadership Speaker Series. These sessions provide valuable opportunities for interns to hear from executives about their jobs and career paths. Social responsibility is also on the agenda, with all interns volunteering at local non-profit organizations during WEX Cares Week in June.

“Last year we had an intern who did a great job helping us build an acquisition email campaign that we still use today,” said Tom Magadieu, director of marketing acquisition and engagement for North American Fleet. “This year we have a number of interns in the marketing department – from analysts who will help us get more meaning from our customer base web behavior to creative talent who will help us build out our marketing communications capabilities.”

We’re excited to see the meaningful work our interns engage in over the next two months. Stay tuned for a wrap-up blog in August to read about all they accomplished during their time with us.
