As a leading global provider of payment solutions, we rely on a deep and experienced bench of technology professionals to help us innovate and deliver our market-leading products and services. And as a rapidly growing technology company, it should come as no surprise that we’ve seen more new IT talent join the company this year than ever before.
Many of our new IT hires – including director of enterprise applications, director of data center engineering, and cloud solutions architect – reflect growing opportunities within our technology group, where we’re adding more leadership roles. Our expansion into cloud-based and other new technologies is driving some of our technology hiring. And as a Java shop, we’re always looking for professionals with hands-on Java experience who can fill roles from software developer to team lead, manager and director.
“In addition to solid core skills, experience and education, we also look for people who will thrive in our culture. For IT professionals, that means individuals who are passionate about technology, innovative, and looking to join a company where they can make an impact, regardless of the level of the position,” says Kim O’Grady, a senior recruiter who’s spent the past six years helping us identify candidates for a range of technology positions throughout the company.
At WEX, we’re all about tactical and strategic thinking, and our technology group looks for people who will help us execute on our goals – usually within a quick timeframe. That executional drive is coupled with a desire to bring innovative thinking to the table so we can remain competitive by continuously improving our technology solutions.
We look for IT professionals who are comfortable coming in and meeting with the team during the interview process – maybe even jumping on the white board to show their thought process around coding. And even though we’re a rapidly growing global company, we still operate a lot like a start-up. That means we’re hiring lean teams and looking for people who want to be hands on, make an impact, and continue to grow with us.
“The chance to work closely with IT talent of all levels in a collaborative and fun environment is what attracts, and keeps, our IT people here,” observes Brigitte Emmons-Touchette, our director of global talent acquisition. “Challenging the status quo, testing new solutions and pushing the boundaries of what is possible are not things you get to do in larger, more formal organizations and this start-up vibe is especially strong on our IT teams.”
Demand is high for IT talent, and we’re working to be both creative and flexible in our search for new hires. Most of our current IT hiring is for our South Portland location, which operates as part of a global team interfacing with counterparts in our U.K., New Zealand and other offices. We’re having success attracting professionals to Maine with the added perk of a great quality of life, as well as relocation assistance when needed. The development of interns into full time WEXers has been another great way for us to grow our IT bench strength. We also work closely with our legal team and external legal partners to sponsor individuals who might need a work visa to join the company.
“The bottom line is that to get the right talent, we’re willing to be as open and flexible as possible,” says O’Grady. “When reviewing resumes for IT positions, education and specialty certifications always catch our eye. We also look for people who’ve made progress in their careers, had a promotion or two, and have some longevity with a company. We want someone who wants to join WEX and be part of our continued success.”
