WEX Development Program Featured in Association for Coaching Magazine

December 21, 2016

As a global leader in corporate payments solutions, WEX has been committed to growing its footprint across industries and borders, scaling rapidly to support customers in 200 countries through our offices in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Leadership Development in a Period of Exponential Growth

With this rapid growth (we’ve quadrupled our employee count in the past 11 years) came a few bumps along the way, but we were able to address these challenges thanks to a newly implemented Leadership Development Program that continues to turn a global team of smart, driven and fiercely proud WEX Employees (WEXers) into something much more than that.

Thanks in part to the hard work of Alison Soine-Norris, Director of Global Learning and Organization Development at WEX, we are developing a pipeline of talent that works hard, realizes opportunities for growth and empowers our employees. This success was featured in the quarterly Association for Coaching (AC) Coaching Perspectives Magazine.

How WEX Develops Leaders: A Brief Look into WEX’s ILDP

The article, Coaching in Action: How WEX Develops Leaders (p. 27-28) dives into the ongoing WEX Integrated Leadership Development Program (ILDP). The goal of the program is to develop leaders who are ready and able to think globally and participate in WEX’s growth and continued success. Following is an excerpt from the article:

WEX wanted to build on its ‘people-first’ culture in a measurable, methodical way. […] [While the previous program] was effective, [it] did not knit together the various regions, functions and lines of business to allow leaders to build broad networks and learn together. […] WEX wanted a program that would give managers the skills and tools they needed to drive their career forward; build cultural competency; and deliver measurable outcomes for the company.

A leadership roadmap identified leadership development needs at all levels of the organization, and a tiered series of development program was created, based on the leader’s level in the organization and the company’s core values. The Integrated Leadership Development Program (ILDP) focuses on senior leaders with a further program for managers, team leaders and others with first-line supervisory responsibility.

[…] Activities during the five-day experiential workshop reflect the behaviors needed on the job: active listening, inquiry-based questioning, a willingness to be open and vulnerable, flexibility and responsiveness. The number of graduates who have been moved, promoted or transferred since attending outpaces those who have not been on the program by three to one.

The full article takes a much deeper look into the methods, practices, and outcomes of the ILDP and other programs at WEX, and how this ongoing program helps our leaders thrive in a global environment.

The Continued Success of the ILDP and other Leadership Development Programs at WEX

Following the first ILDP in 2015, considered a tremendous success by leaders, coaches, and attendees, our company has: hosted four more of these five-day workshops; implemented an Integrated Management Development Program (IMDP) for managers and team leads; introduced change leadership internally; executed development plans through cross-functional projects and teams, and a plethora of other programs designed to improve the culture and capabilities of WEX’s leaders.

We are excited to host more of these programs in 2017 and beyond as we strive to meet our strategic plans to accelerate growth, make targeted investments and scale by building the skills needed to sustain people development in our culture.
